The original developer has left. Their comments still haunt production.
Why this one bites
The medium approaches an old system as though it might answer a séance. Ghostly hints, unexplained flags and warnings against touching anything stand in for reliable documentation. The key source of knowledge is an absent colleague whose name still appears in the system's messages.
The supernatural setting makes a practical dependency visible: the software survived, but the explanation of its behaviour did not. Maintenance becomes interpretation of remnants. The joke is affectionate toward the person doing that work and less forgiving of the circumstances that made divination necessary.
Accessible summary
- An employee uses a spirit board beside cobwebbed servers, candles and ghostly figures. An empty chair says Dave left in 2014, while a system message tells the reader to ask Dave.
- The role interprets old comments, configuration and obscure warnings. The final line imagines dead documentation occasionally speaking through the logs.
Reading notes
The system's age is not the central problem. Old software can be dependable and well understood; new software can already be undocumented. The medium appears when knowledge of why the system behaves as it does has become concentrated in people who are no longer available. A warning to ask Dave is not documentation once Dave has left. It is a record of a dependency that the organization failed to replace.
Logs, comments and configuration can still provide evidence, but each has limits. A comment may describe an earlier version. A flag may protect an integration that nobody remembers. A test can demonstrate what happens without explaining whether that behavior is intentional. The maintainer must compare these fragments, form hypotheses and investigate carefully enough not to destroy the only working example.
That work is technical reasoning, even when the surrounding organization calls it magic. The supernatural props satirize the expectation that the right person will somehow know. A more sustainable arrangement captures the questions answered during maintenance, preserves reproducible tests and gives time for knowledge transfer before the next departure. The joke's affectionate target is the practitioner holding the séance. Its sharper target is the company that repeatedly loses its explanations and then budgets as though contacting the departed were a normal support procedure.
