Cheap Executive Oracle

Independent validation, programmed with the preferred conclusion.

Reality Bytes Me artwork: Cheap Executive Oracle

Why this one bites

The oracle accepts an ambition, consults fashionable trends and returns a confident forecast. The result appears external and authoritative even though its direction was supplied by leadership before the process began.

The one-dollar machine turns confirmation into a purchasable service. Its predictions are precise enough to encourage funding and vague enough to survive disappointment. The humour lies in calling this foresight when the apparatus is chiefly reflecting what its customer wants to hear.

Accessible summary

  • An oracle sits with a crystal ball and trend reports beside a prediction machine priced at one dollar. The machine accepts vague ambition and promises neither refunds nor accountability.
  • The illustrated method begins with a predetermined conclusion and ends with what leadership hoped to hear. The result is validation from a source leadership indirectly programmed.

Reading notes

An outside perspective can challenge a preferred plan, but only if it is allowed to return an inconvenient answer. The oracle receives the desired conclusion as an input and returns it with the appearance of independent validation. Leadership can then cite the result as confirmation from elsewhere, even though elsewhere was instructed what to confirm. The machine launders preference into apparent evidence.

The price tag is part of the joke. A cheap answer is attractive when the purpose is reassurance rather than investigation. Testing assumptions would take time, require access to contradictory information and might reveal that the opportunity is smaller than hoped. The oracle supplies the emotional benefit of analysis without imposing the possibility that analysis will change the decision.

A credible forecast explains its assumptions, uncertainty and what would prove it wrong. A prediction designed mainly to survive disappointment avoids those commitments. It can be precise about success while remaining flexible about when and how success should be recognized. The cartoon invites a reader to examine the relationship between the question and the answer: was the source asked to evaluate the ambition, or simply to describe a future in which the ambition worked? Those are very different services, however confidently the crystal ball glows.
