The Seagull Manager

Flies in, makes noise, leaves a mess, disappears.

Scene and commentary

A seagull wearing a red tie flies away from a meeting table as papers scatter through the air. Five alarmed colleagues remain below, surrounded by disrupted documents and a spilled drink. The bird is already leaving the scene whose consequences the people at the table still have to sort out. No dialogue is required: the direction of travel tells the reader who is available for the aftermath.

The Seagull Manager represents intervention without continuity. A brief appearance creates new urgency, challenges an existing plan or issues a demand, but the person making the intervention does not stay long enough to understand the dependencies or resolve the resulting contradictions. The team must work out whether the new instruction replaces the old one, who approved the change and what should now happen to the work already underway.

Senior attention can be extremely useful when it supplies a decision that the team cannot make alone. The difference is whether the attention brings resolution or simply disturbance. A short meeting can remove a week of uncertainty. It can also create a week of uncertainty if strong opinions are delivered without a clear decision and the speaker then becomes unavailable for clarification.

The scattered papers give that uncertainty a visible form. The disruption is not limited to the minutes spent listening. People must reconstruct the plan, compare interpretations and explain changes to others who were not present. The apparent efficiency of a quick visit is therefore measured from the wrong side of the table: the visitor saves time while everyone else spends it.

A useful intervention leaves an intelligible trail. What changed, why did it change, who owns the next step and how can an unresolved question return? Those details are the opposite of the seagull's disappearing act. The cartoon does not object to a manager flying between teams. It objects to treating the noise of arrival as leadership while leaving the actual coordination to the people cleaning up the meeting.
